Framlingham College Chapel AV system

Integrating technology into a sacred space

The requirements

Framlingham College is a boarding and day school for boys and girls aged 3 to 18, set in Suffolk. The College enjoys a fine reputation as a fully co-educational school, large enough to enjoy the benefits of outstanding facilities and extensive grounds, but small enough to retain a friendly and caring atmosphere.

The college has an on-site chapel which is over 150 years old and a listed building. The chapel holds up to 400 people, some of which are seated in the annex to the left of the main chapel. Consequently, there is no direct line of sight for some of the congregation…

Framlingham College asked AV Unit to find an audio visual solution that would not only serve both areas of the chapel but could be implemented with minimal impact on the sacred space. The key requirements of the visual system were to display hymn sheets, videos and presentations but also to provide a live camera relay to those seated in the chapel’s annex. The solution would need to be installed, taking care not to damage or unnecessary disrupt the fabric of the building whilst providing a system that can easily be used by anyone.

“I can’t tell you how grateful I am to AV Unit, we faced challenges when trying to bring this old beautiful building into the modern age. AV Unit allowed me to run with ideas and then tidied them up into practical solutions that allowed us to implement av without damaging the sacred space. Overall we have been very impressed with AV Unit, with the service and technology that was on offer to us.”

Brynn Bayman, Chaplain, Framlingham College

The solution

For the main chapel, two Epson 5000 ANSI Lumens projectors were installed discreetly behind pillars, minimising the visual impact of the installation. These project directly onto the chapel walls, negating the need for further drilling and mounting of screens but also allowing it to be completely invisible when not in use.

The annex is a space left to the main chapel which seats 200, however, due to the positioning of the annex some of the congregation struggle to see the services that are being held in the main chapel. In order to provide all audience members with a good view, we mounted three 55” high definition LED screens in the annex. An HD video camera provides a live relay to these screens allowing both the main chapel and annex audience members a full view of the service.

Whilst Framlingham college already had a sound system in place, part of the project was to integrate the new system with the existing equipment. In addition we relocated the Allen Organ speakers to improve the aesthetics and provide good distribution of the sound source.

To create a simple, easy to use system a control panel was installed to allow access to the key audio visual functions across the chapel, allowing staff members the ability to use the audio visual system without the need in-depth for training.
